Miroslav Bambušek’s authorial project is based on the work of the German writer and playwright Wolfgang Borchert, largely unknown in the Czech Republic. Borchert is one of the first German authors to openly express his views on the tragic events and traumas associated with World War II. Despite his prosaic form, his work is special, an expressive poetry of desolation.
Borchert’s man, a young, embittered hero, returns from the war with an incurable inner wound, unable to repress the horror of war, which has shattered all his ideals and dreams and become a destructive experience. The rhythm of his speech is stuttering, almost as if he has forgotten how to speak. His thoughts lack logical coherence. His damaged nerves react absurdly to external stimuli. This condition eventually leads to feelings of groundless fear and anxiety.

Since Autumn 2012, the main productions have been staged at Studio Hrdinů (with a floor area of 1,144m2), in the Trade Fair Palace of the National Gallery in Prague. The venue is located in a former cinema that was destroyed in the Trade Fair Palace fire of 1974. Studio Hrdinů’s ongoing activities have brought the venue back to life and returned it to the cultural map of Prague.
The fundamental and most important part of our concept is to convene genuine, interdisciplinary, artistic dialogue that transcends the boundaries of time, genre, form or content. Our dramaturgy is conceived according to a superstructural approach, which results in a unique synthesis of form and content.
We are constantly seeking progressive forms of dramatic expression. Our venue’s distinct artistic profile is derived from links between theatre professionals and various visual artists. Studio Hrdinů’s commitment to stage design, graphic design and conceptual art keeps pace with other European scenes. Since we aim to enrich theatre with the fine arts, we make more space for the participation of visual artists in all our productions.
Studio Hrdinů has become a well-established Prague theatre with a successful repertory. In 2014, the Czech Alfréd Radok Drama Award named Studio Hrdinů the second-best theatre in the Czech Republic and the best theatre in Prague.
